Class Rules and Expectations Poster

LI: To follow the classroom rules and expectations (including wet day procedures)

This week we did a PB4L poster discussing about the Class Expectations and Rules and why they’re important to follow. This poster is also about respecting the teachers and pupils in the classroom. An example of this is try ignoring fights, It is important to follow these because you might get in a big problem and you will get suspended or expelled.

I found this activity helpful because I get to learn what are the rules and expectations of the classroom.

Research about Scurvy

LI: To understand what a balanced diet looks like and why it is important for human health.

For our first Inquiry topic for Term 2 we did a study about what a scurvy is, how can people get affected, and what can we do to avoid it. We wrote did you know facts to help us be able to learn about scurvy such as, Did you know Scurvy can lead you to a gum disease? Scurvy is caused by lack of Vitamin C for at least 3 months. I was mostly common for pirates/sailors.

I found this activity interesting because it helped me learn information about Scurvy and it makes me realize that I have to eat fruits and vegetables everyday.

Statistical Investigation

LI: To read the text, gather sort, graph and analyse the data

Our maths group created a diagram which shows the top six rivers in Auckland from smallest to largest. We used our collaborative skills to find out the data of each river. We put these rivers in this order from shortest to longest. We used our knowledge to come to the conclusion on what river is the longest out of the 6 rivers in Auckland, which is the Wairoa River being the longest at 65km.

I found this activity helpful because it helps me learn how to sort and order out the informations.

Main Ideas

LI: To identify the main ideas in the text

This week we have been learning how to find and collaboratively decide on the main idea in a text by negotiating. We read the text Lester and Clyde. This was a text about the consequences of pollution. Our group think the main idea was that the text was telling us not to pollute the environment because it affects other species.

We found this activity helpful because it helps us negotiating and collaborating together as a group so we could get used to each other.

Word Building

LI: To build words from a base word using prefixes and suffixes

This week we have been learning how words are build from a base word using suffixes and prefixes. A base word is a complete word by itself that changes when you add a prefix or suffix. Our challenge is to see how many words we could make from one base word. In this DLO the word we used was ‘excite’.

We found this activity interesting because I learned how to build the base words by using suffixes and prefixes in a helpful way. For an example: if you add prefix un which means not with the base word excite which means it shows more happiness, that will create the word unexcite.

What is a River?

LI: To identify and describe the features of the Tamaki River

This week we have been learning about what rivers are, their unique attributes and how to label them. We then created a DLO about the Tamaki river and its history. Did you know that the Tamaki River was one of the busiest rivers back in 1870s. Using our knowledge that we acquired, we showcased the features of the Tamaki river using an aerial map. We then compared the Tamaki River with a prominent river in the world. Our group chose to look at the Nile River. The Nile river is the longest river in the world that travels through 11 countries!  Finally we made a comparison of the two rivers.

We found this activity interesting because we learnt new informations about the Tamaki River and the Nile River.

Explanation Writing

LI: To understand the structure and language features in an explanation

How did Goldilocks upset the bear family?

To upset someone is to make people unhappy, disappointed or worried. In the fairy tales Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Goldilocks made some problems that upsets the 3 Bears. Has anyone upset you before?

Goldilocks did not think of what might happen to other people if she consequently upset them by disrespecting their privacy. Goldilocks was certainly curious, so with this in mind she decided to enter the house. The smell of the porridge made her hungry, she felt the urge to try every single bowl of porridge as a result she found the one that was just right. In fact, Goldilocks destroyed the Bear’s property which she is not showing respect to the Bear’s property.  How would you feel if someone destroyed your property?

She felt tired when she finished eating. Otherwise she went into the bedroom. Goldilocks tried every until as a result she found one that was just right, the bed was so cosy and comfortable so she constantly fell asleep. This means that she is using the Bear’s property without asking or knowing it’s theirs. When the Three Bear’s came back, they were so shocked by what they saw. How would you feel if someone broke into your house?

If someone came into my house, I would be shocked. If someone destroyed one of our property, I would be angry and sad. If someone is sleeping on my bed, I would be disappointed.

To help us understand how to write an explanation we looked at the purpose, the structure (what it looks like) and the language features. An expalantaion tells us how or why something is the way it is. To help us understand this we learnt about cause and effect. Cause and effect is an action and a reaction. We used the story of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears to help us understand this. Here is our explanation that describes how Goldilocks upset the Bear family.

This activity was fun because I learned how to write an Explanation in a easier way.

Treaty of Waitangi

LI: To explore the world in 1840 and the art of the Treaty

This week we looked at what the world looked like in 1840. Did you know that Queen Victoria was the Queen of England? After this we identified some of the key people and their role in signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. I found it interesting that Hone Heke was the first person to sign the Treaty of Waitangi and he was a supporter of the Treaty of Waitangi. We then used the information from both of these activities to help us read a painting of the day the treaty was signed. We used our knowledge to infer what the artist Marcus King might have wanted us to think was happening. I found this really interesting because it helps me learn lots of informations about the Treaty of Waitangi and the painting that was made by Marcus King helped me infer so I could think what was happening on the day the Treaty of Waitangi was signed.

Commanding Conversation

I completed a can-do task called Commanding Conversation.

First, I had to pick an image.

Next, I had to pick a name for the people that is on the screen. For an example: The boys on the image are Jack, Chester and Lucas.

Last, I has to write a conversation that describes the image.

I enjoyed this activity because. I did well on writing my own conversation. I need to improve on checking on the sentence if it makes sense.

Basic Facts Boxes

I completed a basic fact can-do in Addition in random.

My finishing time was 2 minutes and 14 seconds and I got all the answers correct.

I did well on getting all the answers correct, I need to improve on finishing it under 2 minutes.
